Sadness is an emotion that everyone experiences throughout their lives. However, there are some people who experience sadness with such intensity that it begins to consume all aspects of their lives. For these people, simply getting out of bed in the morning can become difficult, as their minds are overwhelmed with negative thoughts about the present, the past, and the future. No matter what they try, these people cannot seem to find control over their emotions. If you can relate to feeling this way, and if you have found yourself struggling to get through each day feeling helpless to change, you do not have to continue living this way. We want to help.
At Ten Lakes Center, we recognize that living a life dominated by depression can be extremely difficult, which is why we have developed treatment options that are designed specifically to address and treat the symptoms of this illness. Ten Lakes is an acute geriatric psychiatric unit located within Trinity Twin City Critical Access Hospital, which has a newly renovated emergency department and 25-bed medical care unit. When people come to us for help, we make it our goal to provide them with the highest quality of care in the safest, most comfortable, and most therapeutic environment possible.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
When you have a family member or loved one who is suffering from depression, you may feel unsure as to whether or not there is anything that you can do to help him or her. You may also feel unsure as to whether or not your loved one really is suffering from depression and needs treatment. Here are some warning signs that might be exhibited by a person who is struggling with depression:
- He or she is no longer participating in things that he or she once enjoyed
- He or she is isolating him or herself from family and friends
- There are noticeable changes in his or her appearance (e.g. doesn’t bathe as frequently, doesn’t brush hair, wears same clothes repeatedly, etc.)
- There have been changes in his or her eating and sleeping patterns
- He or she has been participating in self-harming behaviors
If any of these are things that you have noticed in your loved one, then it is time for him or her to get professional help. Without an appropriate intervention, his or her symptoms will likely only continue to worsen. With treatment, however, your loved one can overcome the symptoms of depression and move forward towards living the happy, healthy life he or she deserves.
Why Consider Treatment at Ten Lakes Center
If you are suffering from depression, you may feel hopeless about the future because you do not believe that anything can be done to make your symptoms dissipate. Your feelings of sadness and helplessness may be so strong that you do not even remember what life was like before those emotions started taking over. We want to help you remember what it was like. We want to help you go back to living a life free from depression.
Inpatient treatment clinics have been known to be one of the most beneficial ways to receive treatment for depression. When people are treated in an inpatient clinic, they have access to someone who is available to meet any of their needs 24/7. While receiving inpatient care, people are also provided with the opportunity to step away from the stresses and emotions of their daily lives at home and/or work and focus solely on becoming well. These treatment clinics also allow people to meet other individuals who are struggling with issues similar to their own, showing them that they are not alone. Through a variety of different therapeutic approaches, inpatient treatment can help you overcome the symptoms of depression in a safe and confidential environment.
Our Philosophy and Benefits
At Ten Lakes Center, we recognize that everyone who comes to us for treatment has their own unique life experiences that have aided in helping them become the people that they are today. As a result, we strive to provide treatment plans that are individualized to meet the specific needs of each of our patients. Our highly trained, caring, and compassionate staff is committed to understanding and meeting both the short-term and the long-term needs of the patients we serve. We work hand-in-hand with families, primary care physicians, and long-term care facilities in order to best understand the individual needs of each patient in a way in which we would not be able to without their input. We aim to develop professional and collaborative relationships with all of the agencies and facilities that refer patients to Ten Lakes in order to provide the highest quality of care for everyone who comes to us for help and to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate care once they leave our treatment center.
Types of Treatment Offered at Ten Lakes Center
When patients arrive at Ten Lakes Center, they will first meet with one of our intake specialists who will walk them through a comprehensive evaluation. The purpose of this evaluation is to help us determine each person’s specific treatment needs. Once the assessment is complete, it is closely reviewed by the intake staff and one of our doctors in order to ensure that our inpatient treatment will best meet the needs of that patient. Once admitted into our treatment clinic, patients are provided with their own interdisciplinary treatment team who will meet weekly to discuss the different aspects of the patient’s specific treatment plan and make sure that all needs are successfully being met and all concerns are successfully being addressed. Some of the therapeutic methods that you may participate in while being treated at Ten Lakes Center include the following:
Medication management: Patients who are suffering from depression will most often find an immense amount of relief through the use of medication, most commonly in the form of an antidepressant. Additionally, some patients may need other types of medication in order to treat a co-occurring medical or mental health disorder. Every patient is seen daily by a physician and weekly by a psychiatrist to ensure the therapeutic effectiveness of the medications being taken and to make any changes that may be necessary.
Group therapy: At Ten Lakes, group therapy is our main approach to treatment. Multiple groups are held throughout the day and cover a wide variety of topics. Some of the topics that may be discussed in these group sessions can include mindfulness, distress tolerance, stress management, emotion regulation, and anger management.
Individual therapy: Individual therapy is held on an as-needed basis as determined by each patient’s treatment plan. Sessions can be added at any time if deemed appropriate to the successful advancement of treatment. Individual therapy is a time where patients meet privately with a therapist and discuss any concerns they may have, address any presenting issues, or refocus.
Family therapy: At Ten Lakes, we believe that family involvement in treatment is extremely important to successfully help our patients. Family members of our patients are included in all of the different aspects of the treatment process and are encouraged to attend the treatment team meetings that occur three times each week. We also understand how difficult this time can be for the family members of our patients, so we provide them with education regarding their loved one’s illness and recommended services that will help ensure that their loved one receives the appropriate continuity of care once he or she leaves our center. In addition, we also hold visitation hours twice daily, between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm and again from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Recreational therapy: All of the patients being treated at our center participate in some form of exercise at least five days per week. We also provide options for other forms of recreational and experiential therapy that we have found to be beneficial for our patients. These include things such as arts and crafts, art and music appreciation, and a time for reminiscing.
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
We understand that leaving treatment can be somewhat overwhelming for patients, so we start planning for discharge at the time of admission. In doing so, the patients are aware of what they can expect at the end of their stay with us. Most commonly, our patients are referred back to the facility that referred them to us. In some cases, however, patients may require an alternative aftercare plan, such as placement in an extended care facility. Our social services department is available to work with the families and guardians of our patients in order to help determine what placement and which services will best meet the patient’s future needs.
In addition to inpatient treatment, Ten Lakes Center operates The Wellness Center, which is a partial hospitalization program (PHP) located in New Philadelphia, Ohio. This program is held Monday through Friday from 9:30 am until 2:30 pm. Our PHP includes three education groups and two process groups that meet each day. Additional services that are offered include individual and family therapy as needed, medication management, and monthly visits with a psychiatrist. All patients are provided with a daily lunch and, for those who are located within a 30-mile radius, transportation can be provided as well.
