Bipolar disorder is an illness that can cause great upheaval in the lives of those suffering from it. It can also cause an immense amount of distress in the lives of those around the person who is struggling with the symptoms of this disease. Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for bipolar disorder at Ten Lakes Center in Dennison, OH

If you have bipolar disorder, you may feel worried about what your future holds. You may be frightened by your symptoms and the lack of control that they have forced upon you. You may already have started noticing negative effects on your interpersonal relationships or in your abilities to work to your full potential or adhere to daily responsibilities at home. But bipolar disorder does not have to run your life.

Inpatient treatment clinics have proven to be successful in treating people who are struggling with bipolar disorder. These clinics allow people to step away from the stresses of their everyday lives and focus solely on learning about their disorder, developing coping skills to deal with their symptoms, and learning to overcome any adversity that the illness has placed on their lives.

Helping a Loved One

Helping a loved one struggling with bipolar disorder find treatment

If you have a family member or loved one who has bipolar disorder, you know first-hand how devastating its effects can be on a person. You may have watched your loved one acting out in ways that you do not understand, ways that you have never seem him or her behave before. You may have seen your loved one go from being overly outgoing and provocative to suddenly being withdrawn and timid. His or her fluctuating emotions and behavioral changes may have left you feeling helpless as to what you can do to help. The cycle between the depressive and manic episodes that define bipolar disorder can cause the most frustration for the people around the individual because no one knows what to expect next. Some of the warning signs that are typical of manic and depressive episodes can include the following:

Manic episode:

  • Rapid speech
  • Racing thoughts
  • Flight of ideas
  • Expressions of grandiosity
  • Acting provocative and flamboyant
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • Impulsive behaviors

Depressive episode:

  • Increased need for sleep

  • Frequently crying
  • Suicidal ideation

If these are patterns of behavior that you have noticed your loved one experiencing, then it is time to help them get the help they need. When left untreated, the symptoms of bipolar disorder will only continue to worsen, causing further disruption and destruction in the individual’s life.

Types of Treatment

Types of bipolar disorder treatment offered at Ten Lakes Center in Dennison, OH

When patients arrive at Ten Lakes Center, they first meet with one of our intake specialists who guides them through a comprehensive evaluation. The purpose of this evaluation is to help us determine each person’s specific treatment needs. Once the evaluation is complete, it is closely reviewed by the intake staff and one of our doctors in order to ensure that our inpatient treatment will best meet the needs of that patient. Once admitted, an interdisciplinary treatment team is assigned to the patient and they will meet weekly to discuss the different aspects of the patient’s specific treatment plan and make sure that all needs are successfully being met and all concerns are successfully being addressed. Some of the therapeutic methods that you may participate in while being treated at Ten Lakes Center include the following:

Medication management: One of the key components in successfully treating bipolar disorder comes in the form of medication. Among other things, medication plays the crucial role of helping to stabilize one’s mood. Every patient is seen daily by a physician and weekly by a psychiatrist in order to ensure the therapeutic effectiveness of the medications being taken, make sure there are no negative side effects, and make any changes that may be necessary.

Group therapy: At Ten Lakes, group therapy is our main approach to treatment. Multiple groups are held throughout the day and cover a wide variety of topics. Some of the topics that may be discussed in these group sessions can include mindfulness, stress management, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal relationships, and anger management.

Individual therapy: Individual therapy is held on an as-needed basis and sessions can be added at any time if deemed appropriate to the successful advancement of treatment. Individual therapy is a time in which patients meet privately with a therapist and discuss any concerns they may have, address any presenting issues, or refocus.

Family therapy: At Ten Lakes, we believe that family involvement in treatment is extremely important to successfully help our patients. Family members of our patients are included in all of the different aspects of the treatment process and are encouraged to attend the treatment team meetings that occur three times each week. We also understand how difficult this time can be for the family members of our patients, so we make sure to provide them with education regarding their loved one’s illness and answer any questions that they may have. Additionally, we hold visitation hours twice daily, between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm and again from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Recreational therapy: All of the patients being treated at our center participate in some form of exercise at least five days per week. We also provide options for other forms of recreational and experiential therapy that we have found to be beneficial for our patients. These include things such as art and music appreciation, arts and crafts, and a time for reminiscing.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for bipolar disorder

The transition that occurs at the time of discharge has the potential to be overwhelming for patients, so we start planning for this at the time of admission. In doing so, the patients are aware of what they can expect at the end of their stay with us. More often than not, our patients are referred back to the facility that referred them to us. In some cases, however, patients may require placement in an extended care facility. Our social services department works with the families and guardians of our patients to determine what the most appropriate placement and services are once the patient has been discharged.

In addition to our inpatient treatment, Ten Lakes Center operates The Wellness Center, which is a partial hospitalization program (PHP) located in New Philadelphia, Ohio. This program is held Monday through Friday from 9:30 am until 2:30 pm, during which time patients participate in three education groups and two process groups each day. Additional services that are offered include individual and family therapy as needed, medication management, and monthly visits with a psychiatrist. All patients are provided with a daily lunch and for those located within a 30-mile radius, transportation can be provided as well.
